An opinion about the new 75 minute class system
±èÀº¿µ | ½ÂÀÎ2016.12.17 20:36

Nowadays, Daegu university is in an uproar over the new 75 minute class system. However, I didn't find anyone who knew about the 75 minute classes and students spread groundless rumors. Most of the students were focused only on the fact that 50 minute classes were to be changed to 75 minutes. They didn't know about the details of the new system.

To change something is always risky and there is usually a lot of opposition. Furthermore, if that information is not accurate, the problem becomes more critical. Therefore, we need to know about the '75 minute class system' first and then we can express our opinion. So, let's examine the pros and cons of the new 75 minute class system.

The 75 minute class system will bring with it several notable changes. First, it will not apply to all course, it will only apply to 3-credit classes. Second, this system will change the class from 50 minutes and 100 minutes to 75 minutes and 75 minutes. The break time will also change to 15 minutes, which is an increase of 5 minutes. Also, the end time for all classes will increase from 4 :50 to 5 :50.

Third, this system determines the assignment model of the lecture timetable. Until now, there was no regularity of class assignments, but when the 75 minute class system is introduced, lecture timetable will have some rules.

For example, student A attends a 3-credit class on Monday, he must listen on Wednesday, if student B attends a 3-credit class on Tuesday, he must attend on Thursday. That means, Monday classes are always paired with Wednesdays, Tuesday classes are always paired with Thursday classes.

The regularity of class assignments can have some expected effects. First, it can alleviate the phenomenon of class concentration at preferred times. Currently, there is a way to schedule the time according to the convenience of the professors, but when the 75 minute class system is introduced, the schedule is according to the assignment model.

Second, it can minimize overlap between major classes, through the regular assignment model of the lecture timetable. Third, minor and double major students can possibly complete their credits.

Next, there is strong evidence to support the use of the 75 minute class system. Since the early 2000s, there has been an increase in the number of universities adopting 75 minute class systems. Currently, many universities in Seoul and across the country are adopting the system. Nearby universities like Kyungpook University, Yeungnam University, Keimyung University and Daegu Catholic University carried out the plan several years ago.

Then, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the 75 minute class system? There are three features advantages and three disadvantages. The first advantage is that the system can accommodate classes like debates and seminars. Also it can change the class's lecture more systematically. Currently attending classes for 50 minutes once a week and 100 minutes once a week the classes are unbalanced. Moving to equal class times will correct this problem.

The second advantage is the break time changes to 15 minutes, which is an increase of 5 minutes. This time is enough to move to other classes and prepare something. Especially, we expect high efficiency at our university where the campus is too large.

The last thing is that we will be able to manage our timetable better than under the current timetable. The 75 minute system will determine the assignment model of the lecture timetable so it will be easier to remember our schedule of classes.

Next, there are also three disadvantages. First, students who are accustomed to 50 minutes of class will complain about 75 minute classes. Maybe they will lose concentration because of the increased class time. Second, 2-credit classes will continue to be 50 minutes that means, two kinds of class systems will progress together. Therefore, the end of classes are all different. As a result, there will be noises due to the different finish times.

Third, there may be a lack of classrooms at certain times or problems in utilization of classrooms.

The 75 minute class system has those advantages and disadvantages. What do you think about this new class system? Do you agree or disagree?

Let's see the opinion of school officials. A survey of our university professors this year showed that 52% of the professors agree with the 75 minute class system. Looking closer, we can see that by age group, those in their 30s were the highest at 76.7%, while the older the age, the less in favor, but those in their 60s also had a positive response to this system at 55.2%. However, at the one time briefing session about the 75 minute class system on November 1st, most students who participated were opposed to the new system.

As a result of interviewing the 'class registration' department, school personnel said "I predict that the system will be difficult for students to adapt to initially, but many universities adapted to this system and the result are good. So, we have to push forward with the 75 minute class system. I want you guys to accept it with an open mind rather than negative thoughts."

Change is always a challenge, but it is necessary to think and judge carefully, not to oppose change unconditionally. The new class system is important to university students, so we must think about the 75 minute class system carefully.
