This summer vacation the Daegu University newspaper office visited Jeollabuk-do (Jeonju, Gunsan, and Gimje). Let me introduce Gimje, one of the places we visited.

 Gimje has Byeokgolje (Historical landmark No.111). It is the biggest and best water installation and was built 1,700 years ago. Gimje is called the first agriculture because of this. It is made famous in Korean literature, for example the Arirag saga written by Jong-Nae Jo put Gimje in the background.

 In the Honam plains, Gimje has an especially unimpeded view of the bay. Gimje is the only place where the sky and broad plains make a complete whole. It looks like a horizon, and because of this Gimje is famous for the village of horizon. So Gimje has a festival about agriculture and the horizon, and this year the Gimje welcomes the 19th anniversary of the Horizon Festival.

 During Three Han states Byeokgolje had three major water installations, so you can experience various activities around this main area. Over here there are many experience programs free of charge, such as making arts and crafts with grain, doing Korean traditional plays, and wearing the Hanbok, the Korean traditional dress. Additionally, near here is the Arirang Museum which you can also see free of charge.

 Because of these attractions, this festival has been selected as a representative festival in Korea. This festival will take place from September 20th~24th, during five days. When your time allows, leave Gimje and enjoy the Horizon Festival at Byeokgolje.
