A Pet and Yellow RibbonView Point

Han Il-Kwan CEO was been bitten by a French bulldog and later died of infection. It became a major social issue. The French bulldog was singer and actor Choi Si-won's pet dog. It tried to bite his fellow singer and the security guard of the apartment in the past. In addition, the number of people bitten by dogs has increased by four times in five years due to the increasing number of pet dogs in Korea.

In the revision of the relevant laws of the last year, the governor of Gyeonggi-do Province, Nam Kyung Pil, announced a plan in which pet dogs which weigh 15 kilograms or more must wear a muzzle and the length of the leash must be less than two meters long. However, neither side is satisfied with the plan so it is being criticized by the public. According to the standard of the current law, it is based on aggressive dogs, rather than large dogs. The current law applies to dogs such as, Tosa-inu, the American Pit-bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, Rottweiler, or hybrids of these dogs. However, if such a fierce dog is less than three months old, putting a muzzle on is optional.

As the number of people bitten by dogs has increases, various solutions are appearing. But the distance between those who raise pet dogs and those who don't raise pet dogs has not diminished. Among the solutions currently being presented, 'Yellow Ribbon' is popular. The yellow ribbon that the dog wears contains meaning, 'please don't come near me.' There are many different types of dog that wear this ribbon. Dogs that have a disability, pain due to abuse by humans, psychological instability due to depression or stress, poor health, or are aggressive, and etc. wear a yellow ribbon. Not only yellow ribbons, but also yellow handkerchiefs or straps are possible. Besides the puppy, it is a world-class promise not to approach animals with a yellow ribbon.

The promise of "Yellow Ribbon" is important but, making a proper law is also important. Establishing a clear standard based on propensity or danger, etc. not weight, and promoting that law is important. Of course, the considerate behavior and thinking should be a priority rather than the law. It is ridiculous to apply a rule which requires pet dogs to wear a leash and to wear a muzzle and not go near or do anything to touch the cute pet dogs. In this way, creating a culture of companion animals considerate to each other is the manner and the desirable form for all.
