CPR Class and Teacher¡¯s Added Ability
±èÀº¿µ | ½ÂÀÎ2018.06.05 12:19

In Daegu University teacher's department (teacher's college), students have been required to take CPR and first aid classes since the 2nd semester of 2016. The Ministry of Education revised the law as a provision for the acquisition of a teaching certificate, so it consists of a system in which teaching certificates are given only after completing the classes a total of two times before graduation.

I applied for this CPR and first aid class because I'm a student at the teacher's college, and as a result, it gave me a huge interest. I've never been involved in this class or education before, but since taking it I continue to think that this class is indeed necessary for us.

The class is 4 hours in total. In the first 30 minutes, the instructor explains about CPR and first aid, and the rest of the time after that was used for student activities. Instead of simply being taught from a book, the classes were held with the CPR being done by using a mannequin directly, and the instructors corrected students one by one.

I have heard many lectures about CPR and first aid up until then,. however I learned with certainty that it would be of no use if I did not do it directly through this training. From the help request to the CPR, as if it was a real situation, it felt totally different compared to sitting down and taking classes.

Learning about an AED is an especially memorable part of this class. Do you know what an AED is? An AED is a device that helps restore the heartbeat of a cardiac arrest patient back to normal, and can be seen in public places such as subways. As you can see from the name, it is 'automatic', and it can be used easily by anyone. If you use it correctly, you can greatly increase the patient’s survival rate.

70% of patients that had an AED used on them recover to normal health during a heart attack, however its rate of use is very low at 0.6%. An AED is an instrument that can be used easily by anyone who learns how only once, therefore this class was a valuable lesson that made me aware of the existence of AED’s as well as how to use them.

The following is an introduction about CPR and how to use an AED.

<CPR>

⓵ Check the patent's awareness

Tap the patient's shoulders gently to confirm their consciousness.

⓶ Request help

At this time the people surrounding the situation could be confused, so it is necessary for you to clearly point out the person and ask for help. For example, you need to direct instructions, such as "Yellow hat in front of me, please call 119 and gray coat next to yellow hat please bring the AED. Hurry up!“

⓷ Jaw-lift method

Lift the head with one hand and raise the chin.

⓸ Check the Breath

Make sure your body is as low as possible and that you can check the patient's breathing.

⓹ CPR

30 times at a rate of 100 times per minute. Straighten your arms and press on the patient's chest vertically at a minimum of 100 compressions per minute at a minimum depth of 5cm, then subtract the force. One, two, three, counting to the total thirty, so that the pressed chest is completely relaxed.

⓺ 2 times artificial respiration

Block the patient's nose and blow twice in their mouth. At this time, the patient's chest must be raised so that your breath has entered their lungs. It is also important to note that you should blow while lifting their head and raising their chin.

⓻ Repetition

Repeat 20 chest compressions and 2 artificial respirations until 119 paramedics arrive.

<AED>

⓵ Turn on the AED

Place the automatic defibrillator in a position that does not interfere with CPR and press the power button.

⓶ Attach two pads to the chest of the patient

Pad1 : Right under the right collar bone.

Pad2 : Attach it under the chest

If the pad and defibrillator main body are separated, connect them.

⓷ Analysis of the patient’s heart rhythm

If you hear a voice prompt "Analyzing", stop CPR and release your hands from the patient. If defibrillation is required, the battery will start charging with the energy set by itself, along with a voice instruction, "Shock is required". If the patient does not need defibrillation, you should immediately begin CPR after the voice prompt "No defibrillation is needed.“

⓸ Defibrillation

Make sure that everyone else is away from the patient before pressing the shock button.

⓹ Immediate resuscitation of CPR

Repeat until 119 rescue teams have arrived.

I hope that our L.L.F readers can be aware of CPR and AED’s. If possible, I think this class should be taught throughout the whole of the university, not only in the teacher's college. I would like to share this class with all of my fellow university students.
