Korean SAT Changing and Student's Confusion
±èÀ¯¹Î | ½ÂÀÎ2018.06.05 16:49

Welcoming the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Ministry of Education decided to change the Korean SAT from relative evaluation to absolute evaluation. Therefore students will be evaluated by absolute evaluation from the 2022 Korean SAT. This bill has not been definitely decided upon, and will be settled in August.

As changing the Korean SAT, public opinion was really hot. There are many people who are in favor of the opinion but there are some people who oppose it. The advocates are divided into people who assent with changing every subject and people who assent with changing only some subjects. The advocates argue their opinion with several reasons. The first reason is reducing the pressure on students. There were some students who got a perfect score until this Korean SAT. They had a good grade, so the students felt more pressure than before. However, if the school subjects are graded using absolute evaluation, the students who get an appropriate score are similar with the students who got a perfect score in the last test. This therefore reduces infinite competition and the number of people who obsess on a specific subject. The second reason I preventing concentration on specific subject. Until coming to the Korean SAT, students studied a subject which they like and then they match their lowest grade with a subject. However, if the Korean SAT changes to absolute evaluation, it will remove this situation. The last reason is reinforcement of public education. Some people criticize this opinion however, because of the real cost of private education.

The objectors argue the weakening of power of discrimination. If the evaluation system of the Korean SAT changes, a transcript of school records screening process will increase more than before. This screening process is unfair because it's good for only a few students who have good scores. There is also a case where a school changes one student's record. Finally are the people who are repeaters, and so on. The process which orients Korean SAT must be future Korean SAT consistent for many people like the students who get bad results in another screening process, the students who drop out of school, and the people who studied later. These are the reasons put forward by the objectors.

This bill is not definite, so it has scope for dispute. Arguments from both sides are really strong. If they make any decisions. there are both good points and bad points. The Ministry of Education will catch problems and resolve them, and then endeavor to create a good bill which everyone approves and get a good result.
