Human Right and Disabled Discrimination

On April 6th, 2018, an event was held in the Sunshine Square at Daegu University to commemorate ‘The Day of Discrimination against the Disabled’. The event was organized and supported by the ‘Department of Special Education’. The event's moto was, ‘A change in consciousness comes from a small change’, and it successfully attracted students of Daegu University who were passing by.

The purpose of the event was to promote the existence of ‘The Day of Discrimination against the Disabled’ because, compared to other memorial days, most people are not aware of it or its meaning. The activities were designed for non-disabled people to understand the inconveniences faced by disabled people, such as physically challenged, vision-impaired, and hearing-impaired people.

In the booth for physical disability, there were four different activities to try. People could learn how to operate a manual wheelchair and they could even get in a wheelchair. There were activities involving the opposite hand; they had to color a design and move snacks with chopsticks.

In addition, a ‘True or False’ quiz was prepared to raise awareness of etiquette for physically challenged people. In the booth for hearing disabilities, participants were taught how to introduce themselves in sign language. The soundless speed-game using their mouths also caught the eye of students passing by. Participants were also able to learn Braille and print their name in Braille.

Performances by three different departments of education also grabbed the attention of passersby. The sign language performance was performed to the song ‘Cherry-end’ and ‘Missing You’, whereas the body language performance was performed to ‘Saemool’ and ‘We are one’. Audiences of the performances seemed to be touched as they were watching. The concert not only advertised the event to students, but also encouraged a caring concern toward the disabled.

With its tremendous facilities tailored to the disabled, Daegu University is known as one of the universities which disabled people desire to attend. However, there are still some factors which tend to make the disabled uncomfortable. For example, not all the classrooms are suitable for those who are in a wheelchair; they must take out chairs to sit at a desk. One of the event staff, who is currently a student in the department of special education, mentioned, ‘PowerPoint based classes are such a huge obstacle for those who have a vision problem; all they could do is just listen to what the professor says.’ One of the participants, who has a friend suffering form deafness, says, ‘There aren’t enough stenographers and sign language interpreters to cover all hearing-impaired students at Daegu University; I often do their jobs for my friend.’

Even though we are living in the 21st century, there are many disabled people who live with discrimination and inconvenience. The famous blind musician, Stevie Wonder once said, "We need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability." It is our job to take equality of disabled to the next level. Since disabled people take such a minor part in the society, non-disabled people are obliged to awaken to help and stand by the minority.
