A Controversy of NAVER Pros and Cons.Society
³ª½ÂÈñ | ½ÂÀÎ2018.06.05 16:52

NAVER has always emphasized 'the basis of our technology platform is secured with the user's trust and transparency'. Recently however, manipulation has occurred in the news service comments public opinion situation, regarding the fabrication of news comments by Drooking. Regarding this, NAVER announced a revision of news comments just 10 days later.

First, the number of up and down votes for news articles which was permitted without limit on a single account, has been limited to 50 times within 24 hours, and the number of consecutive clicks of up and down votes has been limited to 10 seconds. Second, the number of comments per article that can be written with one ID has been limited from 20 down to 3, and the interval between writing comments has been expanded from 10 seconds to 60 seconds.

Due to this revision, on April 30 the total number of up and down votes were 2,457,365 down 5,064,482 from April 23. This is less than a third of what was more than 6 million votes prior to the revision. Over the same period, the total number of comments were 268,166 down 44,569 from last week.

However, as a result some people searched for other press websites and repeatedly posted similar content comments on news articles. In addition, it has emerged that some people tried to look like other comments by typing the same content and using only vowels or consonants at the front.

In this respect, the policy that reorganized the number of comments per article being limited to three needs to have some technical supplementation. People who can manipulate macro programs can also manipulate comments. Kim Seung-joo, a professor at the Graduate School of Information Security at Korea University, said. "Just as all hacking attacks can't be prevented, not all macros can be blocked because new techniques to detour blocks keep coming in succession whenever a comment policy is put out."

NAVER will announce its first revision of the comments system on April 25, followed by its second one in May. In the second revision, NAVER will announce the revision of the comments line up method, intensified identity of the author of a comment, the foundation of blind functionality, write a comment regarding issue social accounts and reviews for the limiting of up vote and down votes.
