‘A loaf of bread is better than the song of many birds’, it is an English proverb depicting how much happiness food can bring. To maximize the happiness of students, Daegu University has four different cafeterias available to serve food for students. They are called the ‘Woonji-kwan’, the ‘Bokji-kwan’, ‘8-ho-kwan’, and the ‘Dormitory cafeteria’.

Unfortunately, two of these restaurant facilities have recently changed their operating company, and the menu change has caused several complaints about food taste and sanitary conditions toward students. To know how students feel about the current food suppliers, a sticker survey was installed in the Woongji-kwan to attract passersby.

Lasting for three days from May 8 to May 10, the survey attracted more than 300 people. The questionnaire included the survey of which school meal facility students prefer the most, and which factors they valued the most in choosing what to eat.

8-ho-kwan (47%, 149 votes) seemed to be the most popular cafeteria at Daegu University. It was chosen by almost half of the participants. The Bokji-kwan (23%, 73 votes), Woongji-kwan (19%, 61 votes), and Dormitory cafeteria (11%, 37 votes) followed.

More than half of students valued the taste (55%, 99 votes) as the most important factor in choosing the school meal. The price (30%, 55 votes) and the sanitary conditions(15%, 28 votes) were next.

Bo-young Lee, one of surveyed students, answered several questions after she voted.

Q1. Do you routinely eat in a school cafeteria?

I rarely have food at our school because I prefer to eat at home. However, when I skip my breakfast, I go to the school cafeteria with my besties.

Q2. Where do you often go?

I often go to the Woongji-kwan because it is closest to my college department.

Q3. What is the most important thing in choosing what to eat?

What I consider is its accessibility and taste. The Woongji-kwan is accessible, but when I have spare time, 8-ho-kwan will always be my choice because of its quality.

Q4. Is there anything you want to mention?

Yes. I’ve seen several complaints about the sanitation via SNS. I hope that all student cafeterias will be more careful about their hygiene!

The most important value for students when they choose what to eat was taste and price, and the best restaurant for it was 8-ho-kwan. However, sanitary conditions were not to be neglected according to the survey and interview; all cafeterias should work on their hygiene more carefully.
