A New Experience at Murray State University
¹ÚÁö¿ø | ½ÂÀÎ2018.10.02 00:50

From last August to this May, I studied abroad as an international student at Murray State University in Kentucky for two semesters. Even though Murray State University is not one of the biggest universities in the nation, I felt I made the right decision because of the friendly professors and friends, and many programs. Here are some values about Murray State University for students who are planning to go there.

Residential colleges; not a house, but a home

More than dormitories, residential colleges act as a home for students. Each residential college at Murray State University has distinctive features, providing many leaning programs and activities to students for a whole semester.

There are eight residential colleges at Murray State University, including Clark, Elizabeth, Hart, Hester, Regents, Richmond, Springer-Franklin, and White. All residential colleges include a kitchenette where students can find the value of cooking with friends from different cultures, a TV lounge, a rec room, and laundry rooms. The only thing is difference is the way to use bathrooms. Depending on their housing, students can share one bathroom between connected rooms, or they can share two community bathrooms per floor.

Not only do facilities vary, but also each residential college has their own flags, traditions, and annual events. Whether students live in any housing, they’ll meet new fellow students and get opportunities to meet a life-long friends through a variety of activities. For example, when starting off each semester, each college has their own dinner party like barbeque, hamburger party for free. All students, even if they are not students living on campus, can enjoy eating food with new students. Also, there are a lot of programs varying from big events like sporting events and the Campus-sing, to trivial events such as making cupcakes, movie night, and learning calligraphy.

Before starting a new semester, every student must apply online for housing where they want to live for the semester.

Dining; one of the best campus dining facilites in Kentucky

It is a fact that the food between South Korea and the U.S. is totally different. The traditional Korean meal is a bowl of sticky rice with some side dishes. But in America, the staple foods are corn, bread, and meat. Most Korean students in the U.S. easily get tired of eating hamburgers, pizza, and sandwiches called American foods.

One thing that makes students feel relieved is that Winslow, which has some of best campus dining in Kentucky, has various food menus for every meal, considering different cultures. The different sections like self-pizza, Deli, Grills, or Main allow students to pick up their own meals. Not only the delicious foods, but also various events in Winslow such as Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, Winter Olympic party, or Multicultural night make students enjoy both eating different foods and learning about different cultures.

Also, students at Murray State University can enjoy the delicious convenience of the Pony Express truck, which has several hamburgers, sandwiches, and sides, and grabbing a cup of coffee at Curris-café.

Other facilities in Murray State University; a huge wellness center and library

A lot of students in Murray State University spend their time working out in the wellness center and studying or doing assignments in the library.

The wellness center at Murray State University has many machines such as treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and rowing machines. Not only machines, but also 3 basketball courts, and 2 racquetball courts help students to keep a healthy life-style. It also provides enjoyable classes like Zumba, Pound, Yoga, and Spinning that encourage students to have fun while getting healthy.

In the Library, it has a lot of books, articles, newspapers and magazines where students can use the resources for assignments. Also, many computers help students to do their homework without their own laptops. However, nothing is more beneficial than the Writing Center in Waterfield Library. The teachers in the writing center help students to become better writers with some writing strategies for free.
