- The positive side

Have you ever recorded one of your lectures?

I’m sure everyone has recorded at least one. Nowadays, at universities it is easy to find students recording a lecture in classrooms. It is useful for supplementing or studying classes through recording.

So, do you think it’s OK to record our lecture.

Before we answer that, let’s check out the meaning of ‘record’ in the dictionary. Record means to keep a record of something, ; in other words, to keep a written account or photographs of it so that it can be referred to later.

So, recording is what we do to record something. Most of the time, when we record in class it is due to need.

First, in a class of 75 minutes, we record because it is difficult to concentrate for the entire period.

Secondly, it is difficult to adapt to different classes because each professor has a different voice volume and speed. This is why recording can help supplement lectures.

Third, it is hard for us to remember all professor lectures and write them down.

You can record a lecture because you need it for other reasons. That’s why we record the lesson and try to review what we’ve missed.

I think that recording a lecture is a right thing to do. Also, I consider it okay to keep the recording on your own and supplement your studies without sharing it with others.

Recording make it convenient and easier for us to study.

What do you think about recording a lecture?

- The negative side

No. 46 (Allow use of a (literary) work) ¨ç Copyright holders can allow other people to use a (literary) work. ¨è The person permitted under the rule of section one may use a (literary) work within allowed methods of use and range of conditions. ¨é The right to use a (literary) work by permission pursuant to section one not be transferrance to a third party without the consent of the copyright holder.

Lectures (speeches) are relevant to literary works under copyright law. From this perspective, the professor who gives the lecture becomes the copyright holder.

Since the students who take the lecture are not an author under copyright law, the professor can determine matters related to copyright. Therefore, a professor can restrain recording or taking photographs of a lecture.

While there are professors who allow recording, there are others who refuse being recorded and feel unpleasant. Recording such a professor’s lecture with no agreement may be an infringement of teachers’ rights.

To summarize, a professor’s permission is surely required when recording a lecture. Therefor, I an opposed to recording lectures without permission.
