Ride-Sharing Service Leads to Neo-Luddite

On December 10, 2018, a taxi driver attempted to burn himself at the front gate of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but later died. What factors caused him to commit suicide in such a radical way? It was to protest against the introduction of ridesharing services.

The new peer-to-peer ridesharing service works as a broker and connects passengers and taxi drivers who joined the service. The unique part of the service is that a driver can be anybody. UberX, a world-famous ridesharing service, launched its Korean branch in 2013, however it lasted only for two years due to the opposition of the taxi union. The taxi union conducted a general strike on December 20, 2018.

There have already been general strikes and violent protests not only in South Korea but also in European nations. The resistance against new technology is the extension of the Luddite movement.

The Luddite movement (its name came from the leader of the movement) is one of the labor movements in which workers fought against capitalists during the industrial revolution in the19thcentury. The workers thought developing machines might threaten their employment.

As new machines were developed, less workers were needed than before. Thus, the value of workers began to fall, which led to the exploitation of labor. There had been claims that it would be better to destroy the machines than to continue to suffer from them. The idea was eventually put into the action.

However, their argument has turned out to be false. Even though technological advances have kept rising day by day, they have created more jobs; it’s an ironic result.

The taxi union's anti-ridesharing movement is perhaps an extension of the Luddite movement. It’s a “Neo-Luddite.” Taxi drivers are fearful of new technology; the ridesharing platform. However, since we are in the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution period’, innovation is bound to take place.

The ridesharing services might become a reality in the future. Therefore, taxi drivers should adapt to the changes or find themselves a way to survive. Also, the government needs to consider countermeasures to minimize conflicts.
