This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea established in Shanghai, China on April 11, 1919. The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea is the first government of the Republic of Korea created to better manage the independence movement and inform overseas countries of its will for independence.
It was designated as a national memorial day on December 30, 1989 and became a government management event from the anniversary in 1990. It came into effect on April 13 every year, until 2018, and then the date was changed to April 11 for 2019, marking the 100th anniversary.
So far, the date of establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea has been designated as April 13 based on ‘the National Movement Yearbook’ written by the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai. However, it turned out that there was an error in the ‘History reference of Korea-Japan relations’ that had shifted. Reflecting the academic opinion, it was changed based on the pictures of the Constitution celebration held on April 11 and the records of the four-year translated book of Provisional Government.
The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea has installed the ‘network system,’ a local administrative system, under the Transport Bureau, as a tool for controlling both domestic and foreign compatriots, and established settlement corporation in overseas countries. In addition to an established ‘historiography department’ to explain Japan's act of aggression and the excellence of Korean history, in July 1921, there were articles and published by the organizations ‘Independent Newspaper’ and ‘Sinhan Youth Daily’ to promote the spirit of independence and inform all internal and external people of the news.
A struggle for independence from Japan consisted of military activities such as the patriotic struggle, support for an army for national independence, and the creation of the Korean Liberation Army. Notable examples are Lee Bong-chang and Yoon Bong-gil.
The government is considering designating April 11 as a temporary holiday, and even if it is designated as a temporary holiday it said it is ‘highly likely that not everyone will be able to rest due to problems such as taking care of children.’
