Green Book, 2018 : Understanding Difference
½ÅÇý¹Î | ½ÂÀÎ2019.03.27 21:01

If there is a special meeting, isn’t this what is it?

A story of a deep friendship between two different men.

“Green Book, 2018”, won the Best Picture prize at the 91st Academy Awards. It is based on a true story from a time when racism was at its most serious in the U.S.

Tony Vallelonga, is a poor man, but also the proud head of his household. He is constantly in search of ways to earn money to support his family. Then one day, he is offered a position as a driver for a rich client. It was Don Shirley, a famous pianist who was also invited to the White House at that time and was asked to perform concerts all over the U.S. Don Shirley decides to go on dangerous tour of the Southern U.S., but realizes he needs a bodyguard and driver during the tour. While looking for someone, he thinks Tony is the right person to do it, so he hires him.

The meeting between Tony and Shirley, starts. But since their first meeting, their relationship has not been good. At that time, the entire U.S. was in a time of severe racism, and the human rights of black people in particular were almost at the bottom. That’s why Tony didn’t think much of working for a black man and refused to work.

However, since he had to work for his family, he decided to join Shirley after lots of worries. The tour of the Southern U.S. left them alone in the car together for hours on end. Nearly every minute of the day, they seemed to be in a business relationship without understanding each other. They had very different personalities, but over time they became buddies with each other by understanding their differences.

The title of the movie, “Green Book”, is actually a book that displayed roads, hotels, and restaurants that were available to blacks for road-trip in the U.S. in the early 20th century. Lincoln declared the emancipation of slaves in 1863, spearheading the Black Human Rights Movement.

Although 100 years had past since the emancipation proclamation, equality between blacks and whites was not achieved, and the human rights of blacks were not guranteed either. Even in the 1960s, when the movie was set, most black people didn’t use the roads, hotels, and restaurants used by white people and were treated as less than animals.

After watching this movie, I remembered the movie which was similar “Untouchable, 2011”.

It is also a story of two different people, blacks and whites, who meet and build friendships.

But I think “Green Book, 2018”, has great significance in that it deals with not only friendship, but also hatred issues. Also, it was impressive because of the combination of social problems and classical music.

You may think of the movie as simply a piano performance or friendship movie, but I think it is enlightening and gives good advice to people of this time. As I said earlier, Green Book is a film that not only reminds us of racism, but also of ‘hate’ in modern society.

Today, what do you think we need?

Rather than cursing and criticizing each other, I hope that we can live together by understanding each other all over the world.

Like Tony and Shirley, two people who have lived opposite from each other, but as they understood each other, we can understand the differences and enjoy each other, too.

So, what’s the conclusion? You must watch this movie :)
