Because people are usually in close contact with the books that they read, books provide near ideal conditions for microbial reproduction. The growth of numerous germs and fungi can be activated during long term storage. In particular, books that are read by many people come into contact with various people’s saliva and other food contamination. Therefore, microbial reproduction is faster and more severe in popular books at the library.
For the pleasant reading and health of the users who borrow the books, a book sterilizer was installed in Changpa Library at Daegu University. The book sterilizer is available to anyone who borrows books. It is in the lobby on the first floor of the Changpa Library.
The way to use it is kindly described on the book sterilizer. First, pull the handle and open the compartment door. Second, split the center of the book and hold it with both hands. Third, put the book fastener with the book opened. Next, close the compartment door and press the start button in the upper right corner. Finally, when the book is disinfected, take out the book and close the compartment door.
The book sterilizer can be used to read without concern of contamination because it removes 99 percent of harmful elements such as dust and germs. If you borrow a book and spend only one minute on your way out, you can sterilize your books. By enabling such a pleasant reading experience, the library administration hopes students in our university will read more books.
