On 4 July 2019 Seong-san leadership program participants headed to Saipan with intent to hold a memorial service for 5000 victims of the Japanese colonial era.
As an extension of the first memorial service which took place in Cheonan (reference article: Pastor Lee and Manghyang Cemetery), Daegu University participants went to the Korean Peace Memorial Tower situated in North Saipan. A university official mentioned, “The reason why the word "peace" is attached to the memorial tower is because the atomic bombs that fell on Japan in the past started right at Saipan.”
Daegu University has been attending the annual memorial service for the last 42 times. In 2016 the university built its own memorial in Saipan to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the university.
With a total of 30 people including four school officials and 26 students of the Seongsan Leadership Program, the memorial service was conducted with reverence.
Program participant Seung-hee Na(21) said, “I was deeply saddened to hear the story of Korean victims who died during the sorrow of missing their country and in various hardships”, and “I realized how important it is to learn history properly.”
Yong-se Lee, a vice president at Daegu University said, “I hope this Sungsan leadership program will be a good opportunity for students to study the painful history that they have never known before, and to realize the will of the university founder, Young-sik Lee, and take pride in our university".
