Japan Olympic Games and Radioactive Contamination
³ª½ÂÈñ | ½ÂÀÎ2019.12.10 12:14

The 2020 Olympics, the worldwide festival, has been called ‘the Radioactive Olympics’ before it has even begun. The concern about the meteorological disasters like heat waves and typhoons is connected to venue controversy. Many people in the world are worried about the lost radioactive scrap material in Fukushima.

These coming Olympics are hosted in the summer(July ,24 - August ,9), and there have been a lot of comments that athletes and spectators won't be able to bear the heat wave of Tokyo‘s midsummer. The IOC decided to change the venue of marathons and walking races in Sapporo.

The open water swimming events, which were planned for Odaiba Seaside Park in Tokyo, have been canceled after water quality tests found colon bacillus more than double the normal amount, which exceeded the standard set by the International Triathlon Union. Since then, there has been a water quality controversy regarding stinky brown bubbles. Unfortunately, the Japan Triathlon Federation has shown no regards and they said in their website Q&A category, “Even if it‘s not good to swim, the starting date is looming and they are trained athletes so, don't worry about the athletes health.”

The organizing committee of the Tokyo Olympics has been emphasizing the safety of the Fukushima radioation problem, but information has now come out that a contaminating radioactive substance was released into the river by the 19th typhoon Hagibis which hit Japan. Despite this, the Japanese Government currently conducts a campaign for agricultural and marine products of Fukushima promoting consumption and is planning to supply agricultural and marine products to the Olympic athlete's village.

Another problem is a major Olympic Games and point of departure of the torch relay is near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Other places near the disater zone include Tokyo's New National Stadium (216 km) where major sports events will be played, Miyagi Stadium (113 km), Saitama Stadium (195 km), Ibaraki Stadium (150 km) where soccer game will be played, and Fukushima Izuma Stadium (73 km) where baseball games will be played. The Olympic Torch Relay starting point is only 23 kilometers away.

According to a graph showing radioactivity figures, a rate of 40,000 is within the radiation management zone, 185,000 recommends voluntary evacuation, 555,000 leads to evacuation, and 1,480,000 becomes off limits and people should evacuate immediately. The Fukushima Izuma Stadium radiation figure is 2,057,800 where people should stop playing sport.

However, Japan is saying the same thing "it's safe" over and over again. The IOC have said in the past, 'Japan has given a definite answer that there is no problem regarding radioactivity.' Now, they have changed their position and are carrying out a radioactivity inspection. Public opinion in Korea is negative about the 'Tokyo Olympics', and some people have already said they will boycott it right from the beginning.
