Nowadays, there are many people who are posting malicious comments online. Posting what we want to say on the Internet is good for freedom of expression. In terms of communication, there are good points.
However, in terms of posting malicious comments, freedom of expressions has side effects. For example, Sulli (a Korean singer) was a victim of malicious comment. She was an active actor and singer. Suddenly, she took her own life on 14 October 2019. People were shocked from the event and some people did not want to believe she received a lot of rude comments, she always showed her smile to fans.
The event led to a discussion of the pros and cons of the real name system. The topic was highly debated since posting comments for communication on the Internet is such a common activity for people today. Now, we are going to compare the pros and cons of the real name system on the Internet.
First, let’s examine the arguments in favor of the real name system. There are many problems associated with anonymity online. One of the problems is posting malicious comments to other people. When people have anonymity on the Internet, they feel as if they can do anything because they will not be held accountable for what they say. Anonymity leads to the illusion that they can commit crimes online because people do not know they are.
For example, nowadays, the Internet is very advanced, so there are many platforms and social network services. People who watch something from the Internet platforms can post comments. When they post rude comments on someone’s posting again and again, they do not feel guilty about posting a lot of rude comments in the end. A victim who consistently received rude comments from anonymous people suffers not only commit suicide. Therefor, we need the real-name system online to hold people accountable.
Second, there is a problem with punishment. Some people spread false rumors about others online. A victim of lase rumor wants to accuse the person who spread the rumor of defamation. However, it is difficult to prove the defamation because the standard of defamation is ambiguous. In addition, it is difficult to chase down an online hater’s ID on overseas sites.
Moreover, rumors can lead the victim to start witch hunt to find out who is posting the malicious comments. The victims of rumors have trouble in their daily lives because they think that many people believe the rumors and will look negatively at the target of the rumor. If the victim wants to remove the false comments, they may have to pay to have it done. Why should the victim have to pay for removing false comments? It is unfair to victims. To solve the problem, the government should use the real-name policy and introduce to punish online haters.
In contrast, there are many positive points raised about the anonymous system online. We will examine those in the next section.

The first disadvantage of Internet real-name system is it violates an individual’s freedom of expression. In 2012, the Constitutional Court ruled that the Internet real-name system violates freedom of expression as well as freedom of speech. Actually, when the name is revealed, anyone can hesitate to express their thoughts, no matter how good they are.
However, when you have anonymity, you can freely point out and express your opinion about political and social issues facing society. Thus, you need to secure your privacy anonymously and make your opinions known.
Another disadvantage of the Internet real-name system is that it is easy for personal information to leak. Under the real-name system, misuse of a lot of information could result in personal information being leaked. For instance, the Nate On hacking incident resulted in the personal information of 35 million users being leaked. There are several victims who have not been compensated in this case. If people’s personal information is leaked, it can lead to other damages such as property problems.
Finally, when the real-name system is implemented, there can be people who are alienated from both reality and the virtual network. We can easily see such cases through blogs or cafes. For example, there are people who have professional jobs and people who are unemployed.
If they know the same information and express their opinion, the person who has a professional job will be more trusted than a person who is unemployed. This real-name system will evaluate the reliability of the opinions according to an individual’s status or social position.
In this way, there are tow perspectives of the real-name system on the Internet. The Internet real-name system can help prevent people from escaping the consequences of posting false or malicious comments, and assist authorities in punishing cyber criminals.
However, the real-name system violates individual’s freedom of expression and jeopardizes personal information. In the end, I think creating a clean Internet comment culture may be a good way to deal with the problems without drawbacks when we have a considerate mind each others!
