Caffeine Overdose at DU

Every exam period, students take books and coffee to the library; they are indispensable. The problem however is that most students don't recognize what coffee actually does to their bodies. They just consume it because it relieves fatigue from sleep deprivation.

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that stimulates the brain and central nervous system, and it helps you to stay alert. How does caffeine overdose affect the human body?

Effects on the

1) Brain – Caffeine overdose causes insomnia, headaches, behavioral anxiety, and emotional disorders.

2) Heart - Caffeine increases the heart rate, causing high blood pressure.

3) Stomach – Caffeine increases gastric acids which will eventually cause gastrointestinal diseases such as stomach ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease

4) Nutrient - Caffeine interferes with the absorption of calcium and iron. It may cause anemia, osteoporosis, and periodontal disease.

A cup of coffee contains about 100~200mg of caffeine. The standard for safe caffeine intake is 400 mg per day for adults, 200 mg for pregnant women, and 2.5 mg per kilogram for children and teens.

Some may say that the standard is higher than expected, but caffeine is widely contained in not only coffee but also energy drinks, soft drinks, and chocolate. An average energy drink(250ml) contains about 62.5mg of caffeine. Coke has 23mg per 250ml, and chocolate contains 16mg of caffeine in every 200ml.

To avoid side effects from excessive consumption of caffeine, you should check the amount of caffeine in your food and keep the standard for one-person caffeine intake. Also, drinking decaffeinated coffee or drinking tea at low temperatures is another method.

John F. Kennedy, the former President of the United States, once said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” Many college students study overnight to get good grades and be successful, but those are meaningless unless you can maintain a healthy body.
