A Landscape of Population Policy in Slogan It is very interesting to look at the history of Population policies one of Korea’s typical enlightenment advertising because population policies show a big difference periodically. Through each period of slogans and posters, I will summarize the nation’s population policy during 50 years. In the 1950s, Korea was devastated by the Korean War. So nations needed to recover post-war losses and overlap their baby boom. The establishment of the first population policy since the 1960s to the 1990s shows the control of birth. “The less you have children, the more you and your children will be good.” “Bear moderately, raise brilliantly.” In the 1970s, the world’s population was considered too flooded. So we were encouraged to reduce our population. “Well bred daughters, while ten sons were desired.” Maybe you’ve heard a lot about it. In the 1980s, “Honey! We have only one!” “Two’s a crowd.” You can know that an extreme birth control policy was implemented. Even in posters, you can see an only child who lives in a peaceful house seeming to look happy. All houses had an only child which could have a brother or sister between neighbors. We can grasp a notion of preferring a son to a daughter in the 1990s. “Teacher! If I do something good, will I have a girl desk mate? It rose up consciousness that we need to eliminate gender discrimination. In the 2000s, the low birth rate has come to the fore as a serious social issue. “The best gift is a younger brother for children.” The policies have changed. With a population aging, “retirement is in the works, and retirement is not in life.” If an aging population continues, it should happen like a poster. I wonder how population policy will be changed.
