“Tortoise and Hare” in a Justice Society There are Korean idioms such as “good overcoming evil” A longtime dream of humanity is that we live in a justice society. So what is a just society? A dictionary definition of justice is ‘a rational human wish to pursue a rubbing and straight thing anytime, anywhere’. Many scholars wanted to investigate the definition. Have you heard about ‘What is a justice’? It is a lecture of the Harvard University professor Michael Sandel. He is a world scholar in the field of theories of justice. Michael Sandel’s lecture brings the gaze of the public to a degree, especially in Korea. What is the reason it received a lot of attention? Korea has an abundance of material because of a rapid economic growth. However, according to a happiness index, Korea is one of the lower countries in the world. I think that many people look forward to finding essential happiness and justice. Today we can calculate the most efficient, and able to solve a complex equation. However we lack the ability to judge right and wrong. Because we deny education, values, thinking. That kind of thinking is behind the times. A society’s basis of right and wrong has been minimized. That is not an exaggeration. We live in a capitalist society. According to emancipation, a women’s upward social mobility and the globalization, racial and religious discrimination is reduced. But numerous problems that cannot be confined to one area of liberty and equality are happening. Despite the prevalence of market captialism, it doesn’t have clear criteria. Why are large companies getting richer and richer? Why is a building cleaner paid so little? We justify inequality only on ‘market mechanism’ Who have created a difinition? Can we talk this definition is fine? Michael Sandel criticized a definition and led us to think about the values of right and wrong. He suggests three standards; happiness, freedom, virtue. In the book, especially he treats the political, economic, social, economic, social, cultural, religious etc. He doesn’t define justice, he helps the reader think what is right based on specific criteria for themselves. Michael Sandel emphasized that when you consider of right and wrong, you must have a common good. That is he hopes to attain to the dimension that a freedom and equality of individuals are guaranteed, a justice of the community is realized. What can be learned from the story ‘tortoise and hare’? In the cartoon, the tortoise won the race in the end. But what will happen in actual life? Maybe the hare will win. So, sad reality is that even with consistent effort, only a very few cases achieve success. A person who was born in a good environment will be given more opportunities than those who were not. How do you think we can make a just society? I think about a justice society that everyone doesn’t forget his own dignity and other people’s dignity. Everyone can demonstrate his or her talents. It needs to become the heart of symbiosis. Switch off from having a self-centered mind into having another mind.
