Disconnect : A Tragedy in Digital Society The movie Disconnect reflects the aspect of modern people who are living in the digital era candid. It shows the story of people that depends on online services such as SNS, and it can be and gives us an opportunity to reflect on ourselves. The negative consequences of SNS that influences modern society are rising to the surface by ones and twos. So it also led many to voice concerns. “Disconnect” shows the tragedy and shadows in SNS age and has shown an extremely realistic risk. It sends shockwaves as it portrays the cyber crime vividly. Disconnect captures intensively the tragedy and essence caused by SNS, and tells the solitude of the moderns that are living with a lack of understanding and communication. These days, the fact that most of us prefer to use Smartphone during a meeting of family or friends has become so common and widespread that it is frightening. So the stressful figure of the character being embroiled in an incidents or accidents from the lack of communication in Disconnect is no longer unfamiliar. Derrick and Cindy, the couple who have suffered with a lack of dialogue since loss their young son, and they are able to start conversations face to face with each other after the loss of whole fortune. Nina’s approach towards Kyle who unlawfully chats with video on an adult sites just for using exclusive story. But she feel guilty while meeting him on out of a monitor. The tragic stories such as a father that realized the importance of family and regrets after his son, Ben who was so into music without any friends, has an accident one day, or a strict father who brought up his young son by himself and was being overprotective, but doesn’t pay much attention to his son Jason, reflect that reality that many dialogues are carried on through SNS but real communication doesn’t come, and it gains sympathy deeply from audiences. The figure of characters that regret the days past and start mutual understanding to overcome the tragedy, convey the stern message that severance of the Internet for true communication is vital. This movie takes a big theme using 3 different types of episodes. Three stories in all, formed omnibus, are a reality and it can be totally immersed. The movie suggests the problem of communication in virtual communities such as SNS and disconnected reality. And it asks a question regarding the loss or recovery of humanity. Personally, I think that SNS and chatting are not bad completely. That doesn’t make it the underlying cause of bullying or painful family histories. Anyway, the clue to solving these problems is understanding, conversation, attention and love, and it can restore the disconnected present-day misunderstanding without a doubt.
