Trump's Controversial Executive Order on Immigration
·ù´Ù¿ø | ½ÂÀÎ2017.04.03 13:30

Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th US president on January 20th. Trump has been quickly progressing his presidential election pledges which has been causing conflict in the world village. According to a White House official, 25 executive orders were signed by President Trump in the month after his inauguration.

On January 27th, as the first step of his presidency, he announced the signing of an executive order on immiration which banned the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries and temporarily suspended the admission of refugees. The countries impacted were Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia.

Trump said that he believes "this new executive action will comprehensively protect" the United States. Thie executive order on immigration has led to more than a hundred travelers detained at US airports and hundreds of people in the world unable to get on airplaines departing to the US.

His radical decision on the immigration issue has led to numerous world leaders giving negative opinions toward this issue. Former US president Barack Obama administration officials have rejected President Trump's decision by stating "President Obama fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion."

Also, many CEOs of companies including Facebook, Ford and Tesla pronounced their negative stance. Elon Musk, CEOof Tesla who is also an immigrant from South Africa himself, tweeted that "many people negatively affected by this policy are strong supporters of the US."

Finally, a federal district court and a federal appellate court took legal action which was a setback for Trump. Then Trump directed the attorney general to file an appeal with the appellate court, leading to a fierce legal battle. However, the federal appellate court rejected the appeal, and the executive order has been suspended.

Despite the suspension of this executive order, controversy over President Trump's immigration policy is still going on. This is due to the fact that he also signed an executive order to commence building a border wall between Mexico and the US, and halt financial support for "Sanctuary Cities" which help illegal immigrants. President Trump's approval rating went up to 57% right after his inauguration and then dropped to 39% in late February. This executive order signed by Trump has been causing division in the US and the world. Radical policies over immigrants, using a sweeping definition of "criminal," may result in detrimental consequences for Trump's government.
