Kim Se-Hwan formed a national consciousness under the guidance of patriots and tried to promote students' national consciousness by carving and pasting maps of Korea on the walls of school buildings. His disciples later grew up to be some of the most prominent independence fighters.
Kim Se-Hwan listened to the nationalism of U.S. President Wilson and wanted to use it as an opportunity for independence so, he led a preparatory group for the March 1 Independence Movement in Suwon and Chungcheong provinces. Kim Se-Hwan was arrested by the Japanese police on March 13 and emphasized the legitimacy of the Joseon independence in court.
