Kim Won-bong was an independence activist during the Japanese occupation period and organized Heroic Corps in 1919. When he was leading the Heroic Corps he felt the limitaion of individual arned struggle and the necessity to train the anti-Japan military group. So he organized the Korean Volunteers Army with the consent of Kuomintang of China in 1938.
He led a part of the Korean Voluteers Army to join the Korean Liberation Army and spearheaded the armed struggle against the Japanese army. He became President of Military Affairs in the provisional government. After Korea achieved independence in 1945, he went to North Korea to establish the single government that South Korea was becoming. After that, he assumed an important post, but he was purged in the Kim Il-sung system strengthening process of 1958.
