The story tells the lives of four sisters after the Civil War. When the father is off fighting in the war, the four girls undergo the hardships of poverty and society. It is a coming-of-age story of the family.

Meg is the oldest sister in the family. She is the most beautiful and well-mannered, as she behaves as a mother when her mother is absent. Jo is the second oldest. With her temper, she sometimes gets into trouble. Her interest is in literature, especially in writing. Beth is described as shy and musical. She loves to play the piano but dies at such a young age. Amy is the youngest sister. Despite her passion for art, she realizes that women can’t be well-known in art and dreams of marrying a rich man.

Since the sisters represent the desires and hardships of femininity, many famous lines came from the interaction of the four sisters. This includes “I’d rather be a free sprinter and paddle my own canoe.”, and “The world is hard on ambitious girls.”

The film's directing technique is a bit unique. The movie jumps back and forth between the past and present. The past is expressed in a slightly faded sepia tone, making it recognizable to the audiences. The transition of the scene may be confusing at first, but it was effective in understanding the characters’ emotions and the overall content.

The film ‘Little Women’ was acclaimed for both its cinematic quality and its popularity. As a result, it has won 178 nominations and 67 awards at international film festivals.
