First step to be a Toastmaster : The English Presentation Contest
Á¤ÇѼº | ½ÂÀÎ2021.12.13 14:27

The 2021 English Presentaton Contest final is planned to be held by S-LAC, at Art 5, on Friday, November 26th. Every student who is attending Daegu University could participate in this contest.

The English Presentation Contest is an annual program. Students who are willing to participate can apply for the contest roughly 2 weeks before the final, on the website (http://heart.daegu.ac.kr). Participants should submit the application with their own visual aids (PPT), a script of the presentation, and the recording file of it.

Every single participant should make a decision for their topic among options, which are varied each year. For this year, in 2021, the following are the options.

-What are the best places to visit in Korea?

-What should be done about plastic pollution?

-Are dogs better pets than cats?

-Should gas and diesel vehicles be banned?

-Identify a problem of Korean society and propose a solution.

Also, Presentations should be 7 minutes in length.

The guidelines for the contest state that judges evaluate not only competitors' language of their visual aids, but also the thesis including their own ideas and answers. Competitors have to deliver their own ideas with clear and effective presentation skills, as well. That means participants should be able to perform their presentation in both aspects, internal (including the thesis) and external (including voice inflections, gestures, eye contact ,etc).

An interview with Kim Min seo, the final competitor of 2020, lets us know the process of preparing the contest in an indirect manner. She performed her presentation about both positive and negative effects of Covid-19 in relation to students' learning. She was able to improve her skills both in English and presentation through every single process of the contest. They are the skills which she can apply in other areas of her life.

But most of all, attending to the other competitors' presentations gave the biggist lesson to her. She was struck by how a single meaning could be expressed in various ways. She expressed some regret during the interview because of tightness from the other schedules and the commonness of the topic.

It's impossible to participate in the contest this year since the 2021 English Presentation Contest already has been finished. If you are eager for this contest, please remember that it will take place again next year. We hope you will challenge your own skills in presentation.
