New Government and New Policy: ¡°Age System¡±
ÀÌ¹Î¾Æ | ½ÂÀÎ2022.07.04 21:33

The new South Korean president Yoon Seok-yeol introduced a new age counting method to replace the original Korean age system as part of his electoral campaign. Koreans could get a year or two younger if this takes place.

There are currently three ways to count one's age in Korea.

The most commonly used method is the 'Korean age,' which counts the months that the baby has been growing in pregnancy and considers people a year old at birth. People add a year to their age every New Year's. So, a baby born on December 31st, 2021, would be a two-year-old a day later.

The second method is the 'international age'; this system is the most mathematically accurate calculation of an individual's age. Age is easured in months for the first year of life. Subsequently, people get a year older on their date of birth every year.

The last method, the 'year age,' doesn't consider people a year old starting from birth but does add a year every New Year's. It gets used when people turn 19 and buy alcohol and cigarettes or when men get tested for their military service.

The government is currently trying to eliminate the 'Korean age' and the 'year age' and merge them into the international age method.

Rep. Lee Yong-ho from the presidential transition team's administrative subcommittee said, "Because the age calculations are not unified, confusions continues to occur when people receive social services or sign various contracts."
