Students' Ideas on the Dormitory Curfew
±è³ª°æ | ½ÂÀÎ2022.07.04 22:35

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the "Bi-ho Living Center" introduced a dormitory curfew system in 2020. Thus, the curfew continued until May 2022. As the COVIID-19 situation gradually eased, there was a backlash from students living in the dormitory.

As more students feel that they are not free due to the curfew, the ‘Chan Neul’ dormitory student council has pledged to eliminate the dormitory curfew in 2022. However, in early March, it was posted on the official SNS of the dormitory self-governing council that the promise could not be fulfilled due to the spread of Omicron.

With the lifting of social-distancing measures in mid-April, students again hoped that the curfew would be eliminated. Some students were excited to be free if the curfew was eliminated, but they were also worried about excessive noise because it would be impossible to control.

A survey was conducted on about 50 people to find out the opinions of dormitory students on the curfew. Of the 50 people, 7.8% said they did not want the curfew to disappear, 78.4% said they wanted the curfew to disappear, and 13.7% said they did not know.

Among the opinions in favor of the curfew, they said, "If you live on a low floor, you will be bothered by the noise of dawn," and "It will interfere with those who sleep at dawn." Students who oppose the curfew are uncomfortable with the oppression that they must come in by 12 o'clock no matter what. They complain that although there may be exceptions for personal circumstances, it is inconvenient to apply for a night out whenever they study for a team project or an exam.

On May 25th, the school's representative student council and dormitory self-governing council actively proposed opening the dormitory 24-hours a day. Eventually, they agreed that from May 30th the dormitory will be open 24-hours a day. Movement from inside to outside will be limited from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. while movement from outside to inside will be permitted at all times.

The 24-hour opening will have advantages and disadvantages. I can feel freedom, but I am concerned about the problem of noise. I think some compromise is needed so that students are not harmed.
