Recently, there has been a growing debate over whether or not to pass a comprehensive set of nursing laws, known as the Nursing Act. Controversy is growing as President Yoon Suk Yeol vetoed the Nursing Act, which had passed a regular session of the National Assembly on December 30, 2021.

Here, the Nursing Act separates the role and duties of the nursing labor force from the Health and Medical Personnel Support Act as a medical law. In other words, the Nursing Act is a law that seeks to secure the rights of nurses.

If you look at the main contents of the Nurssing Act, there are a total of three. First, clarifying the scope of work for nurses. Second, a comprehensive nursing plain is established every five years, and a fatual survey is conducted every three years. Third, securing and deploying appropriate nurses for patient safety.

Let’s first look at the reasons for opposing the Nursing Act. Opponents say that if the Nursing Act is enacted, nurses may be able to conduct medical treatment alone, without the guidance of doctors, It may also lead to discrimination against other regions and cause nursing assistants to lose their jobs.

Next, let’s take a look at the reasons proponents favor the Nursing Act. They argue that there is nothing in the act to promote conflicts that are reversely differentiated from nursing assistants or other regions. They also believe that the possibility of nurses practicing medicine alone cannot exist when the law is interpreted correctly.
