No Smoking policy in UK
±è¼¼Çö | ½ÂÀÎ2023.12.08 15:20

In 1974 the UK had a very high percentage of smokers, with 51% of men and 41% of women smoking. The NHS -the UK's public healthcare system- provides free healthcare to all citizens with taxes. This financial burden has increased as the amount of smokers increase.

For these and other reasons, the UK has long implemented a policy on quitting smoking. In 2003 the UK banned using signs and posters to advertising. In 2009 the UK began supporting the smoking of electronic cigarettes instead of traditional cigarettes.

In 2023 the UK announced plans for an e-cigarette program to combat the problem of minors smoking(Smokefree2030, Swap to Stop policy). In addition, the government has announced that it will raise the legal smoking age by one year every year, so a 14 year old today will never be able to legally buy them.

If the whole British population quit smoking, about 28 trillion won of national tax could be used annually for medical or social welfare sectors. If smokers eat out and travel with the money they would normally spend on cigarettes, it would be about 14 trillion won by 2075 that would help revitalize the UK economy.
